Home>> Guide To A Perfect Workation
You may be wondering what is a workation? Well, it is exactly as it sounds, it’s a vacation where you work. Many of us are still working remotely either full-time or part-time. This means many of us are working from our homes, or a remote office of sorts. This can lead to burn-out, stagnant routine, or a lack of separation between home and work. For more tips on reducing burnout, read here.
What are the possible benefits of a workation?
Passport Photo Online did a study on 1000+ remote workers to see what their recent workations did for them here are the results:
- Most Americans (67%) went on workation to “recharge their mental and emotional batteries.” Another 94% plan to workation again in 2022 and beyond.
- A full 86% of employees agree or strongly agree a workation boosted their productivity.
- 81% of Americans grew more creative at work after taking a workation.
- Nearly 69% are less likely to quit after going on workation.
- As many as 83% agree/strongly agree a workation helped them cope with burnout.
- Roughly 84% are now more satisfied with their job.
If you are in a position to work remotely, try planning a workcation and keep these tips in mind:
Choose a desirable destination
Pick a place that you’ve always wanted to visit. Or choose a location that offers scenery opposite to what you are used to at home. For example, a cabin in the woods may help you connect with nature on breaks, and after work hours. A beach bungalow with a quick jog to the ocean may help you rest and recharge. A tiny home located in a national park may be just what you are looking for. Decide what type of scenery would be perfect for you!
Guide To A Perfect Workation: Set Up
Bring a workstation
In order to have a successful workcation, make sure you have brought all the proper essentials to be able to do your job to the best of your ability. Thinking about:
-Monitors
-Charging Cord
-Mobile Hot Spot (if needed)
-Headphones/microphone
-Camera/Video Conference Set-Up
-Files, Mouses, Keyboards, etc
Plan your length of stay
Decide how long you’d like to stay on your workcation. This can depend on a multitude of factors. You may have an in-person event you are required to attend. You may also want to be budget conscious and that can help you determine the length of your stay.
Decide your work/vacation balance
Are you planning to spend more time enjoying the vacation or at work? Plan your trip according to your work schedule and which will allow for the perfect balance. Choosing the appropriate length of stay can ensure you can fit in all that you want to while still getting your work complete.
Choose the type of location
You may want to choose an area close to you that you can simply drive to within a few hours, or you may want to choose a location you can fly to. Many airlines have super cheap flight specials to certain destinations.
Decide your budget
This can help narrow down your travel options. Renting an AirBNB is a great way to experience a normal work setting with access to full kitchens/beds/showers and often times they have great weekly rates. Sometimes staying in another location with great views is a vacation in itself. I know personally, that working while looking out a lake or being moments from the beach is a great way to refresh. Many rentals are also decorated in unique ways that make your stay exciting without stepping outside! Here is an article outlining some of the most creative Airbnb Rentals.
Think about food
If you are driving, you can pack coolers full of groceries for your stay and cook at your rental or hotel suite. If you are flying, see if your location has kitchen access and a close grocer so you can save money by preparing your own food. Prepping the food once you get there can allow you to ensure you are eating your meals, and eliminate stress. Check out our library of hundreds of recipes at Home By Geneva. If you don’t feel like cooking, depending on your location you may be able to hire a local to come and cook meals for you!
Think about amenities
Think about the amenities that are most important for you. For example, do you want a hot tub or pool to soak in after a long workday? Laundry in unit? A fireplace? Access to beach or hiking trails? This can help you narrow down your search for the perfect place to stay depending on your wants.
Choose your travel buddy, or go solo
Are you wanting to take this trip by yourself? With a partner? Or with friends? Either way, make sure whoever you are going with has compatible work schedules/ideals. This is essential to ensure your workcation goes smoothly. Taking a workcation with someone who has similar hours or work routines can ensure you get the most out of your trip. Also, be sure if you are traveling with another there is a separate workspace or ample space for you all to have a proper setup.
